Board of Trustees Minutes & Agendas

Regular and Special Meeting Minutes

Please note: During their August meeting the Trustees will discuss an amendment to the portion of the Library’s By-Laws that pertain to the election of trustees to authorize those seats currently up for election to be filled for a one-year period by Board appointment.

Resolution proposed August 19, 2020 to be voted upon September 16, 2020:

WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of the Hampton Library deem it necessary to amend the Library’s Bylaws, in accordance with Article XII thereof, due to the unique and extraordinary circumstances created by the COVID-19 crisis (“Amendment”); and

WHEREAS, pursuant to the Governor’s Executive Orders regarding social distancing and election procedures in response to the COVID-19 crisis, the Board has determined it would be impracticable and unsafe to conduct the 2020 Board of Trustees election in accordance with the current Library Bylaws, as adopted May 21, 2014; and

WHEREAS, the Board has determined to amend that portion of the Library’s Bylaws that pertain to the election of trustees to authorize those seats currently up for election to be filled for a one-year period by Board appointment.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Article II of the Bylaws is hereby amended by adding a new Section VIII which states: For the 2020 calendar year only, and in response to the social distancing requirements associated with the COVID-19 crisis, in lieu of trustees being elected by qualified voters, the Board of Trustees shall be authorized to fill each seat whose term is set to expire on December 31, 2020 by appointing by a majority vote of the members of the Board of Trustees a trustee to serve for a period of one year, effective January 1, 2021 through December 31, 2021. The trustee seats filled by such one-year appointment pursuant to this section shall then be up for election at the election to be held during the 2021 calendar year, provided, however, that such seats shall be for a two-year term only. This Section shall sunset December 31, 2023.

A Message from the Board of Trustees

Dear Patrons,

What a year we have had at the library in 2019! The library has become the main hub of our diverse community, and our excellent staff, led by our great director, Kelly Harris, spends a lot of time evaluating the ever changing needs of our community. We have increased our efforts towards environmental sustainability by decreasing our print newsletters and mailings.  Sustainability remains an important goal of our long term planning.

We have increased our Library of Things to include large format lawn games and hotspots, which have been hugely popular this summer. We can help you get wifi anywhere in the Hamptons! We have also spent a lot of effort increasing our teen collection, including graphic novels and manga. The young adult usage of the library has continued to grow, and expansion of our space for the YA department remains high on our list of long term planning goals.

September brings around our annual budget vote and trustee election. The increase this year in the budget is $111,960. This translates to an increase of $7.60 per million assessed. This includes the increase in minimum wage to $15/ hour for staff, as well as the addition of a reference librarian on Sundays to assist patrons. There have also been increases in building maintenance and insurance.

Running for reelection in Bridgehampton is trustee Sandra Ferguson and for reelection in Sagaponack are trustees Sarah Stenn and Tom White. Olivia Kotz is running for election in Bridgehampton, after having been appointed by the board in July to a seat left vacant by Matt Rojano.

Please come out and vote Tuesday, September 24th, and come by the library to check out a new book, attend any of our amazing programs, or just spend some time relaxing away from the hustle and bustle of life.

Sincerely,

Louise Collins, MD
